Listed below are several important reminders for families. These reminders may be helpful in planning for potential inclement weather days:
- The decision to close school will be made as early as possible. Sometimes the decision may be made the prior day or it could take place an hour or two prior to school starting. The decision depends on the timing of the event and what is known about the upcoming weather conditions. In either case, communications will be sent indicating if school will be closed.
- Parents are strongly encouraged to have a child care plan if poor weather conditions are being forecasted.
If forecasted weather conditions are known and school is closed far enough in advance, the district may utilize a “Learn at Home” day. On such a day, younger students (ELP-6) will be given small assignments to complete at home. A computer will not be required to complete these. Older students (7-12) may need to access their computer for virtual learning and/or be completing work without a need for a computer.
- Learn at Home days will be counted toward instructional minutes required by the Department of Public Instruction. If the number of minutes used for inclement weather becomes so severe that the district must add additional time to ensure instructional minutes are met, it will be added in the following order:
- Additional time will be added to the remaining school days
- The March 21st end-of-quarter staff work day will be used for a full day of instruction
- The remaining professional development days (January 20th, February 17th, April 21st) will be used for instruction
- Days will be added to the end of the school year beginning with June 2nd
- If school is closed all after school activities will be canceled.
It is never easy making a decision to close school. Closing school means a loss of instructional time and is an inconvenience for families who need to find childcare. Nevertheless, safety will always be the top priority. If you have questions about inclement weather procedures specifically related to your child’s school, please contact the school office.
